SMARANO INTERNATIONAL ORGAN, CLAVICHORD AND IMPROVISATION ACADEMY
3 – 13 August 2013
“From Meantone to Welltempered Keyboard”
The Academy 2013 is closing the cycle related to Corelli's anniversary. The third year is focused on the question of temperaments. The keyboard music from 15 to 19 century was composed in accordance to the temperament of the instruments and the introduction of the “tonal system” had a strong influence on the gradual abandonment of the meantone and the establishment of circulating temperaments and, in the 20th Century, of the modern “equal” temperament. The Academy will not investigate this complex process analyzing treatises or theoretical sources, but looking at the musical scores, particularly Italian and German keyboard music of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries in order to point out the close relationship between repertoire and temperaments.
A restored Italian style historical Organ (Cavazzani 1792) is being inaugurated the day before the Academy opening and is available in the antique church of the nearby Sanzeno Village. One special day of the Academy will be spent on this organ.
For the first time, together with the organ and the clavichord, the Academy will offer an official “harpsichord class” for participants particularly interested in the beautiful Italian harpsichord repertoire.
